TACOS

Tacos are a fun and casual weekday dinner and are a great way get in a lot of fresh veggies. And if you have kids, they love to make up their own colorful plates! Unlike store-bought seasoning mixes that often contain preservatives and additives like corn syrup solids, homemade taco seasoning lets you control the quality of your ingredients.

Our recipe, developed over the years, uses a blend of spices combined with fresh salsa and honey to create a seasoning that’s clean and full of flavor that give you a fresh alternative to those packages in the store.

This recipe uses 2lbs of ground beef. Simply cut the recipe in half if you want to make a smaller batch!

Ingredients:

  • Taco Seasoning spice mix (this could be enough for 2 batches of tacos depending on how much seasoning you like to use)
    • 1 tablespoon Cumin
    • 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
    • 2 teaspoons Onion Powder
    • 2 teaspoons Chili Powder
    • 1 teaspoon Salt
    • ½ teaspoon Ground Black Pepper
    • ½ teaspoon Paprika
    • ½ teaspoon Oregano
    • ½ teaspoon Cayenne Pepper (skip this if you do not want it to be spicy)
  • 2 lbs. of ground beef
  • 1 medium to large onion, chopped
  • 1 jar of your favorite salsa (I recommend a saucy one, not a watery one)
  • ½ cup of water
  • 1 tbsp of Honey

Instructions:

1. First, create your spice mix. (this could be enough for 2 batches of Taco meat. You can use however much you want depending on the level of seasoning you like.)

2. Heat your pan and add 1-2 tablespoons of oil. Add your chopped onions and sauté for about 2 minutes.

3. Add your ground beef and some salt. Use the GEO to cook your ground beef through. (I typically used a low-fat beef so do not find the need to drain the meat. You will want some of the meat fat to absorb and equally distribute the seasoning in the next step.)

4. Reduce heat to medium-low. Add your seasoning AFTER you have cooked the ground beef fully. Stir it around and make sure all of the seasoning is absorbed and is equally distributed around the meat.

5. Next, add in your jar of salsa and mix thoroughly. Let the meat and salsa cook through.

6. Add in a about a ½ cup of water and let cook down.

7. Lastly, add in the honey and stir.

8. It is best to let the taco meat sit and cook over low heat to let the spices bloom. This will give you time to prepare your lettuce, tomatoes, etc.

9. Spoon into tacos or over lettuce for a taco salad and enjoy!
